The Big Change
In Vice I made changes that were more than just story. One of the biggest changes I made in Vice thematically was the amount of violence. Between the time I was writing this, Sandy Hook, Zimmerman and Aurora and a lot of other shooting happened and I just didn't feel comfortable writing about gun violence anymore. Sara never shoots anyone and when Luce does it Sara chastises him for it. I know it may have bowlderized the characters a bit, but, I have to say, doing this also helped me understand Sara's character more. In both versions of the story she joins up with Rayne as a hacker, not an assassin so she really isn't a killer. Her pre-quel story will explore this.
Also, Alan doesn't really kill anyone, but in retrospect it never made sense for him to kill in Veritas. He is sort of thrown into this world and in reality he wouldn't be able to just shoot people and be okay with it. Which is why in Vice it's a recurring joke how bad he is with a gun, to Vice!Alan just holding the gun is enough of an intimidation.
Toxic Pixie Dream Girl
I don't know if this is a trope or if I heard this somewhere, but somewhere along the line I decided I wanted Minnie to be a Toxic Pixie Dream Girl. I wanted her to come into Alan's life, make things feel a little better and more fun but also ruin his life because she's just selfish, young and has a toxic personality. She does this a little in Veritas, but I wanted to pump it up to 11 in Vice. If Sara is an anti-hero then Minnie is an anti-love interest
...And yes, despite her nearly killing him and being a little selfish Alan still can't let her go.
Name-Spirtations
As we learned from TDOSH, Shawna is unoriginal at times and sometimes I have a lapse at names for things. So I took names from people/places in Cyberpunk lit for some items in Vice. I think I mentioned some, but here they all are:
New Rose Hotel Noir (Sara's wine of choice) - Named after a William Gibson short story New Rose Hotel
Asimov Hotel - Named after the CP lit magazine Asimov, which is named after the writer
Gravity's Angels is a band in Vice, but in real life is Micheal Swanwick short story collection
The Metronome Hotel - Another cyberpunk lit magazine
Arkham School - Named after Arkham Publishing, a house that published CP fiction, but their mission statement is to publish "weird" fiction.
Also, the briefly mentioned Pretty Boy is named after the titular character in a Pat Cadigan's short story Pretty Boy Crossover . I'll also note Pat is one of the few female CP writers. Speaking of CP fiction:
The Research
I had to dig into my old research when rebooting this to get back into the genre. I even skimmed a thesis called (wait for it) Technology and The Vulnerable Body in Feminist Post-Cyberpunk Science Fiction. It talks about disability/cybernetic in cyberpunk fic and I used it to help a little bit when writing Luce's character. I also liked that it referenced and explained stories that went over my head.
Thanks to Google Books and Creative Commons (and Wikipedia) I was able read a couple of CP short stories for inspirations. A lot of them are fairly weird and too out there for me to use like Bruce Sterling's Mozart in Mirrorshades, which is about a company that uses time travel to take historical artifacts and the consequences of the Alternate timelines.. Another one I liked, but was a little to odd was called Pretty Boy Crossover about a young man in a club who is being encouraged by his friend and businessman to sign up to live a new existence as data, where he will be kept young forever in a screen in the club.
But, the one story that really influenced me is a Micheal Swanwick short story called Ancient Engines. It's very short and takes place in a bar and is basically about an old man explaining to a young, arrogant android about how he won't live forever.
Sound familiar ?
Yeah, I pretty much "sampled" the story for the last lines in Vice. But this story also convinced me to make Alan an android.
Other things
The only thing I never explained was how Luce is able to lift the gun without touching it. It's because his cybernetic insides have magnets that allow him to manipulate certain metal objects. I kind of added this in to make you all think he was an android.
Future Fridge Horror
Oh, also apparently they have made a human liver using a 3D printer, so maybe we aren't that far from creating humans ????
What's Up Next ?
You guys....you can get a little excited and I'm going to get a little scared because I am going to open the vault for En Moritas. I now realize Lile's trepedation about opening vaults because this thing has been in the Vault since March 2011.
Untitled En Moritas #1
This story kind of influenced Vice because it focuses a lot on war and the effects. There is one line in particular that sums up why I wrote Vice. This didn't have a playlist, but I picked an unused song from my Vice playlist, Ashes by The Bengsons for it.
So, I'm going to set it up a little bit. I think this story will actually make more sense since I TDOSH'd Sundays recently.
It takes place 2 years after Sundays ( in the Veritas cannon) and Alex and Maxwell are still a thing. The story picks up after Alex has been on a 3-month leave to see his family. Also, (and this is never mentioned in the story) during the time Alex was gone their camp was bombed so, they've moved it somewhere else.
Sundays En Moritas
It's sad to see another serial go.
ReplyDeleteSo. . . I totally stole a few things from Vice and put them in Bellum, but I can't tell if I meant to do it. Alsoo honey, please stop using your time machine and stealing tiny insignificant things from Future!lile for CPShawna to use.
I'm realizing I'm doing this with HMLIS too ! I mean I never realized how much was the same as some LL stuff until I started doing more edits.
DeleteI will never get over us both using the name Jonah
Bittersweet ):
ReplyDeleteI'm glad there is more Vice on the way.
Way,way,way,way down the road.
DeleteIs it fair to blame technology. . .i mean they let legally blind people drive.
ReplyDeleteThey can't afford the fancy cars like the self-driving one Veritas!Alan has.
DeleteI can't wait to learn more about Android!Alan. Do you think Alan will live forever.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I honestly don't know....probably not because he is in a dangerous line of work now.
DeleteNone of that is word of god
DeleteCan we assume Vice is kind of like the future of Vertias techonolgy wise. Could they have made A!A (Android Alan) in the Vertias timeline.
ReplyDeleteYes, he could have existed as an andrioid in the Veritas universe...I think I was just afraid of going there in Vice with the whole andriod thing. It seemed really unbelivable until I read that short story and came around to it.
DeleteLoving all the pre-quel talk. Will it be in first POV ?
ReplyDeleteActually, I'm thinking it won't be. I'll stretch out my third person muscles.
DeleteCan Maxwell be a Toxic Pixie Dream Guy. . .or does he learn to treat Haley more decently ?
ReplyDeleteMaybe a little, Maxwell isn't a nice person, but by the time En Moritas comes along Maxwell is worn down by his job , strangers hating him and people always dying around him that he is nicer to Haley by default.
DeleteSpeaking of En Moritas how exactly does Derek Grace die ?
ReplyDeleteBetter question, SH do you know what Sara's maiden name is.
DeleteDerek Grace in Veritas was shot by a firing squad and in Vice he committed suicide (with a gun) because of PTSD.
DeleteAlso, I don't know know Sara's maiden name.
The SH Vault is amazing ! I'm glad we had TDOSH as a primer, even though we already knew Haley dies at the end.
ReplyDeleteWell, I never confirmed he died. I honestly was NEVER going to share this, but between the TDOSH and Lile's vault I went ahead.
DeleteIs the "terror level" system similar to our own ? I remember the level orange from chap 1
ReplyDeleteYes, I didn't look up how ours goes (I like to limit how often I google search terrorist) but in my head orange is like the one right under red.
DeleteI need V2 now ! Just for more Alan and Minnie
ReplyDeleteThe secret part in my brain wants more Sara/Alan UST.
DeleteThe secret part in my brain wants more Sara/Alan UST.
Delete"Did you fall down the stairs ?,” I ask her.
Delete“Yes, but I stood back up the eighth time ! ,” she slurs with a smile." <3 <3 <3
I really, really, really, don't see Sara/Alan happening. Sara doesn't take Alan all the seriously.
DeleteThen again if it were out of cannon I could maybe see something...
So since Dean is blind couldn't they have been doing stuff in the car . . . .
ReplyDeleteLoved loved loved En Moritas. OPEN DAT VAULT !
Unfortunately for them he's not deaf.
DeleteUgh, I have such mixed feelings about Ken. He seems a little better in SEM, but I just don't know.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to my life.
DeleteOverall Maxwell is not a redemption hero or anything. He's coldhearted and arrgant, ruthless and ambitious and that's probably one of the reasons he survives the war.
OMG, the title is so perfect. Sundays En Moritas Sundays In Death. !
ReplyDeleteOh,, I should note that name isn't Sundays En Moritas. I just added the Sundays to let you know who the story was about.
DeleteIs the a story/inspiration for EL's name ?
ReplyDeletehmm. . .Without the violence the cartel and Rayne don't seem as dangerous
ReplyDeleteDude, if I remember correctly there is A LOT of violence in Veritas. Sara kills a cop in the first chapter.
DeleteWildhorses- I can see that. But cartels themselves aren't about violence, they are about money. Also...Rayne does rip off Luce's leg and cuts Minnie's finger off.
DeleteEden- I think I cut this out of Vice because I thought the kidnapping scene was going on too long.
I like this Idea of a Toxic Pixie Dream Girl (TPDG), I guess Minnie is sort of an enabler.
ReplyDeleteYes! Enabler is a great term.
DeleteWill any of the other characters possibly get a love interest in Vice 2.
ReplyDeleteJean, maybe ?
As I plot Vice in my head I am still having a hard time writing for Jean, this has always been an issue for me. It's why he isn't in Mimic.
DeleteBut, I also don't see Jean as ever having a serious monogamous relationship. I think it's because he feel like he has to take care of first Minnow, and also to some extent Sara and Luce.
Right I almost forgot why this was called En Moritas ): I don't think I can handle any more.
ReplyDeleteYou think there is more ?
DeleteIs what happens with the cybernetic bus drivers in En Moritas
ReplyDeletewhy they have to be a certain percentage flesh for the border patrol in Vice.
No, I kind of just added that flesh percentage as Rule of Cool, but also to introduce the idea of cyborgs for when it's revealed how much of Luce is cybernetic.
DeleteAlso, and I think I've mentioned this, the flesh rule is because it cost to much to fix a cybernetic person. So, technically it's a health insurance issue...
Obligatory where is the link to HMLIS to cover the wound from missing Vice ?
ReplyDelete*abandons comment section*
DeleteI wonder if Haley took the sleeping pill cause Maxwell likes him all drowsy.
ReplyDeleteEh, that came out wrong.
No, he took it because he is afraid of planes and that was his first time on one. Tt was going to tie in to that face that prior to going to prison Alex had never been more than 20 miles from home. I meant to put that in there.
DeleteI can see Haley seems to be much bolder in this relationship
ReplyDeleteThere relationship has become more symbiotic. You know I guess I should have noted technically CPShawna wrote EM
DeleteOMG, how awesome would a short story be about Saint's origin and him and Sera in the early days. It could be called Double S.
ReplyDeleteVice really makes us Moms look cool. Only a good mother would break in and reprogram a failed scientific experiment to protect her and her child.
DeleteIs the Saint program based on anything. Also these ideas are going to make awesome videogames one day.
DeleteThese sound amazing ! We should find someone to write them...
DeleteOkay, I wrote out the Saint/Sara backstory (because I know it) in this comment and then I realized it would make a pretty decent short story so I deleted it..so one day you will have your answers.
No, The Saint Program wasn't based on anything, I just took the easy way out with the religous iconography.
Alan is kind of like the Mimics in Mimic. I mean we can't tell that
ReplyDeletehe isn't human.
Exactly ! Except the Mimics in Mimic were human while Alan most defiantly isn't. I have no idea was I was so afraid of creating androids back then. I mean it does feel far-fetched, but it really COULD happen one day.
