Let's talk about world building....
Building Vice
I'm going to talk a little bit about worldbuilding. I'm not sure the exact moment I decided Vice/Veritas would be a cyberpunk story, but when I began this cyberpunk venture world building wasn't really on my mind. As I've read and researched more I've started to think more on how to build a world.
I've been actively thinking on how this future would look. It's a future that exists several decades after a war, but still along our own timeline. I resist making Vice all "futuristic-y" because Vice only takes place about 85 years in the future. And while things do evolve, some familiar things stay. I mean 85 years ago from now was1929 and I mean alot of things that existed back then still exits: Maybelline mascara, Levi jeans, Ford Cars, The Great Gastby etc.
When I built the original Veritas world I played more closely to the classic cyberpunk tropes; drugs, hacking, technology, crapsack world, rampant immorality than I did to the future building and I kept that same spirit in Vice.
So, that is to say I may have car makes with made up models, a few invented technologies, but I just don't see the Vice world as everyone on hoverboard with jetpacks.
Does that make sense ? This all started because I wasn't sure if I should use the word radio or not. I mean, would radios still exist ? This happens a lot when I wonder if a certain item would still exists and when I try and come up with fashion. It just makes my brain hurt sometimes.
Compulsion 2 / Moving On™
I forgot to include rhat Moving On in the last post. We've re-met our gang and now things are about to get interesting....
Compulsion 2
Playlist (still haven't kicked the top 40)
-1- Magic by Coldplay (I was so in love with this song when I heard it first, it could reallyfit into any of my serials)
-2- Pills N Potions by Nicki Minaj
-3- Coming of Age by Foster The People
Honey you are music goddess ! It fit the mood so well. Isn't worldbuilding just the scariest ?
ReplyDeleteIt is horrifying, let me tell you...but I still totally believe Angels and Demons live in NYC.
DeleteSpeaking of music, I have a few Hozier songs planned for future moments and I think his sound is perfect for Bellum. Do you have any of him ?
We get not one but TWO storylines ! It's like two stories.
ReplyDeleteIt is literally two stories and it is such a balancing act I can't even.
DeleteI was like yum ! Sundaes. . . I see Sunday. Was compulsion orgianlly just going to be Harlow's story.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't call this Harlow's story. I mean it is in third person which is also something new !!!
DeleteI think I knew before word one I was going to have Alan and the characters from Sundays have a story. I just always wanted to write how Haley got arrested.
DeleteHappy Apple --It is in third person, but it's supposed to be a 3POV from Harlow's perspective. I wanted to explore 3POVs that have a specific voice. I do slip sometimes and switch, but it's supposed to be Harlow's POV most of the time.
SV, you took the questions right out of my mouth.
ReplyDeleteThat Maxwell question wasn't originally in there but I figured I'd let the cat out of the back since it isn't that much of a surprise he'd be in this.
DeleteSV, you took the questions right out of my mouth.
ReplyDeleteIn Sundays Harlow hung himself with his shoe laces so I wonder if that's going to come up again.
ReplyDeleteThings seem pretty Gimm for him, but he doesn't seem like the suicide type. Yet anyway.
DeleteLorrie C - Me too ! (jk, I know)
DeleteCoraline-- Oh, hon look at what you did to the word grim. Talk about literary slip.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this. There is just something about youths getting together to cause some trouble. It's striking to see how different Alan and Harlow are.
ReplyDeleteLike Clockwork Orange. Is that Cyberpunk
DeleteAw, thanks Coriander ! I never thought of comparing Alan and Harlow but they are very different. I think in some ways Harlow would love to be in the position Alan is in.
DeleteForget aglet, I'm surpised I don't see the word "cajoling" more often
ReplyDeleteI almost took that word out, I was like: "SHV, what century do you think it is?". I think using weird old time-y language or big words is something I tend to do in third person.
DeleteDoes Cyberpunk always have to be tied with the "future". Can the genre be written in modern times which seem to be more technologically advanced than 20-30 years ago.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I think technically yes seeing as CP was written in the 80's and that was 30 years ago. But I think it has to have this other worldy, 20 Minutes In the Future trope based on the time it's being written.
DeleteChrome is a Mojlliner drug, right ? Will we see the two stories touch each other.
ReplyDeleteChrome is a drug the Mjollner and The Shy Cartel sell. These stories aren't really going to touch and that's why I'm deciding if they need to be told together or not.
DeleteMaxwell is like an ADA or something. Maybe he will be involved in what the government does with Alex.
ReplyDeleteMaybe.
DeleteI want/need that jacket. It looks like Harlow is very flashy.
ReplyDeleteHarlow loves attention. I've searched high and low for a piscpiration for this jacket, but it doens't seem to exist.
DeleteMeta: Also I needed something the cops could use to identify him as the suspect.
I know it's not , but this reads so much like a Sunday prequel. Was a lot of the material from Sunday ?
ReplyDeleteNo, not really. I mean some of the stuff is similar to Sundays but some has changed. Like in Sundays Isla is like 5 and mentioned in passing, but in this I made her 22.
DeleteI had always kind of wanted to write about the crime Haley and Harlow had committed because it's never explained why he was there when they did that. I'd had this scene in my head for a long time and never did anything with it because I washed my hands of Sundays at that time. But after that whole TDOSHing thing I decided to include it here.
I think I'm in love with that Nicki Minaj song. It reminds me of Minnie though.
ReplyDeleteI know, I love it too it was the third song on the playlist and I put it on there thinking I'd use it for one of her scenes, but it seemed to fit here as well.
DeleteHow come Rayne got all mad at Minnie for using Chrome if he sells it ?
ReplyDeleteHe got mad at her because he doesn't want "his people" to use it. This is super hypocritical and is based on something I read about how some mexican cartels don't allow their members to use cocaine because they see it as a weakness and if they do they get killed.
DeleteNew Century Revolution Scripture, I must learn more about this religon.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so in Sundays Haley is slightly religious and I wanted to explore this more, but I didn't want to use an actual religion because of reasons so...I...invented one...I promise it's not as bad as it sounds or super weird and it won't really come up alot.
Deletecue the world building stress
I almost feel like Harlow's story needs a different name. Did you even consider this. ?
ReplyDeleteNo, but I did consider changing Harlow's name because I really dislike it. I'd only used it because I knew he'd be dead in a few paragraphs, but I couldn't find anything better.
