How My Light is Spent
So, I think many of you have figured out that the story within this story (Aris Morrow's book, How My Light is Spent) is a line from a poem by John Milton, a16th century blind poet. I could look for some greater theme between the poem and this serial, but guys researching poetry is hard. You have to read it multiple times to get all the meaning and it just gets complicated. I just needed a line from a blind writer and this sounded nice so...title !
But, honestly, I wouldn't look too much into the title...it was really just fulfilling my wish of using a piece of poetry as a title ala Of Mice and Men and Catcher in The Rye.

Another thing you may want to keep in mind (and something I'm just now realizing) the narrators are somewhat unreliable.
Oh, right. Okay, you all are going to notice A THING with a name. And it's not the Phillip name I had in the sample (who is btw no way related to LiLe.)

So, in my experience (read 15 minutes on Google) there are really only 2 big name blind writers - Homer and Milton. I was actually scraping for a name, so when I saw this Milton line I just took it.
DeleteAs much as I'm dying to know what was planned for BH, I am all over the this story ! The setting and characters are so inticing. Corrine is different from any other female SV POV we've had.

ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting comment. You are going to see a lot of brand names and it's not intentional, I don't decide to say Walgreens, but it sounds more natural than 'drugstore' coming from Corrine's first person voice. They kind of slip out a lot. Also, I just kind of know what kind of cars all my characters drive so I do bring up the brands....points to anyone who can guess Jonah's car (it appears in the next chapter)

ReplyDeleteI think this means something. I man his first book is the title of the story so there has to be something there.
Well, this is explained a little bit later, but it;s not a spoiler. His dad's book is based on The Emperor of Maladies (which did when a pulitzer) which is basically a nonfiction book about Cancer. So, in this world, HMLIS is his dad's book about blindness. We will get into it.
DeleteThese voices all feel so different. They are nothing like Vice, I don' t know how you went back and forth. There is something about Corrine's voice all the little things that make it so great.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you all like this...honestly it was nice to be able to switch between this and Vice when I needed a break from a plot hole or something. In fact...I'm thinking of starting another second project for when HMLIS stresses me....don't look into this.
